INTERNAL RESEARCH PROJECTS

Dynamics of Istrian badlands: from sample to catchment (DONA)

The DONA project is focused on the research of exogenetic processes related to characteristic landscape forms – badlands, which are in Croatia predominantly developed in the area of Grey Istria within the flysch complex. The emphasis is on excessive erosion, which addresses serious issues related to destructive impacts on the environment, such as the filling of accumulation lakes, drainage channels, retention barriers, and the activation of landslides. To address this problem, it is crucial to conduct research that will enable the definition of annual erosion/denudation rates and the study of basic mechanisms and causes, especially in the context of increasingly frequent climate extremes.

In this regard, it is important to understand the relationships between petrographic and mineralogical properties with the physical and mechanical properties of the material (sample scale), as well as the influence of material, climatic, and morphometric features on erosion/denudation (landscape scale). By combining remote sensing, fieldwork, and laboratory work, the project will provide insight into the complex interactions between geological, climatic, and morphological processes, in order to enable not only the understanding of the causes of the problem but also the planning of preventive measures and the preservation of this sensitive environment of Grey Istria.
