BASIC GEOLOGICAL RESEARCH
Sedimentology, Mineralogy of Sedimentary rocks
Sedimentological research are including the mechanisms and conditions of precipitation of clastic, carbonate, evaporites and siliceous sedimentary rocks and their textured, structural, petrological, mineralogical, lithofacies, biofacies, chemical, biochemical, paleontological, lithostratigraphic, paleogeographic and ecological characteristics and features. Research is based on field and analytical techniques (optical microscopy, XRD, TGA / DSC, SEM-EDS).
These researches are important for the reconstruction of the sedimentary bodies and facies analysis. They are one of the basic tools for definition of individual lithostratigraphic units in time and space, and as such the base for the reproduction of basic geological maps and various applied maps.
Sedimentary rocks are the most frequent type of rocks in Croatia. They are the main aquifers and oil and gas collector rocks. Knowing of their composition, characteristics and genesis of sedimentary bodies are important in the applied geology (mineral resources supplies exploration, geohazard preventions and remediation and in search for aquifers).
Two employees of the The Department of Geology participate on the Croatian Science Foundation project of sedimentological themes SEDBAS (Sedimentary paleobasins, water corridors and biota migrations) in leadership of Kovačić Marijan, Prof. (Faculty of Science, University of Zagreb)..
We are also part of Croatian Science Foundation research project BREEMECO - Dinaridic foreland basin between two Eocene thermal optima: a possible scenario for the Northern Adriatic in a leadership of Ćosović Vlasta, Prof. (Faculty of Science, University of Zagreb).
