BASIC GEOLOGICAL RESEARCH
Geological Maps
The geological map represents a graphical representation of geological structure (composition, age and frame) of the topographic base.
Production of geological maps in Croatian Geological Survey from 1909 until today, can be divided in three continuous units. These are Schematic Geological Map at 1:75.000 Scalewhich was produced until Second World War, after that Basic Geological Map 1:100.000 until 1989 and Basic Geological Map 1:50.000 after that.
Work on the map production requires interdisciplinary and competent geological teams, introducing a new scientific methodologies and modern equipment. With a production of Basic Geological Map 1:100.000, our country has received a fundamental map necessary for all further exploration and planning in geological, hydrogeological, engineering research, as in mineral resources research and exploitation, spatial planning, environmental protection, as a base for contstruction of large facilities, in forestry, agriculture and other similar activities. Base for production of the Basic Geological Map 1:100.000 was a chronostratigraphic classification and as a result of that map was limited and insufficient for correlations. This was the major problem for correlations with maps of neighbor countries, in mineral resources research and in comparison of deep data. Except that, chronological map couldn't give all required answers of hydrogeological and engineering geological explorations. Therefore today we are producing Basic Geological Map 1:50.000 based on lithostratigraphic classification which fulfills all these requirements.
