DEPARTMENT OF HYDROGEOLOGY AND ENGINEERING GEOLOGY
The Department of Hydrogeology and Engineering Geology (HGIG) performs tasks from the scientific branch of geological engineering at the scientific and professional levels. It is an applied part of the geological profession that belongs to the technical sciences.
Hydrochemical laboratory of the Department exists since the mid-1990s of the last century and since its establishment is continuously improved, and is now in a high level state to determine numerous parameters important for hydrogeological expertise. The laboratory has equipment for in situ measurements: terenskim sondama s više pokazatelja, osjetilima za kontinuirano mjerenje EC, T, pH i kisika izravno na terenu (tzv. logger), te dubinskim sondama i uzorkivačima (sampler) za bušotine. Ion chromatograph, a spectrophotometer and a Picarro analyzer are significant part of the labaratory equipment. They are used for the determination of the stable isotopes of deuterium and oxygen. This equipment is bought as part of the IPA Adriatic Project of the Drinkadria, similar as TN analyzer of HACH and analyzer of total and dissolved organic and inorganic carbon which are purchased within Croatian Science Foundation project TRANITAL. Some of the instruments of the laboratory are shared with other Departments laboratories. Procurement of laboratory equipment through the European Union or Croatian Science Foundation projects is the main way for future improvement of the equipment. If it will benecessary, the Department will continue to invest their own resources in the improvement of the laboratory equipment.
Unlike Hydrochemical laboratory the Engineering laboratory is relatively new, established in the last ten years. Laboratory is used for the preparation of the samples and also for various engineering and geotechnical experiments. The laboratory is still in implementation phase, but there were already numerous analyzes done as part of fundamental work, scientific papers and doctoral dissertations.
The Department of Hydrogeology and Engineering Geology currently has 34 employees..
