Reinvestigating the Zmajevac loess-palaesol sequence: A multi-proxy study of Late Pleistocene climate transitions in the southern Pannonian Basin
HGI researchers reanalyzed the Zmajevac loess-palaesol sequence using grain-size, stable isotope, and pollen data to reconstruct Late Pleistocene climate in the southern Pannonian Basin (OIS 6–2). Authors found temperatures consistently 4.6–6.7°C below modern levels, a sharp rise in wind activity at the OIS 5/4 transition, and evidence of surviving forest refugia during glacial periods. While the three proxies agreed during OIS 5 and OIS 2, they diverged at other times, showing how complex and locally variable ecosystem responses to climate change were.
