MREG and European Experts Gather in Lisbon to Advance Sustainable Resource Management and Discuss the Implementation of the Critical Raw Materials Act
On October 22–23, 2024, a meeting of the EuroGeoSurveys’ Mineral Resources Expert Group (MREG) and the Mineral Raw Materials group of Work Package 2 (WP2) within the Geological Service for Europe (GSEU) project was held at the facilities of LNEG (Laboratório Nacional de Energia e Geologia) in Lisbon, Portugal. The meeting aimed to advance sustainable resource management and discuss steps for implementing the Regulation of the European Parliament and of the Council establishing a framework for ensuring a secure and sustainable supply of critical raw materials (CRM Act).
MREG, which brings together approximately 80 experts from European geological surveys, provides critical expertise on mineral resources to support policy development at the European level. Through the GSEU initiative and its Mineral Raw Materials work package, MREG seeks to collect, harmonize, and share data, information, and knowledge essential for the implementation of the CRM Act.
Under the Regulation, Member States are required to prepare national exploration programs focused on critical raw materials and their associated rocks and deposits by May 24, 2025. The meeting featured detailed discussions on the planning and implementation of these programs, identifying challenges and best practices. Additionally, the Regulation mandates annual reporting on critical raw materials using the UNFC classification system, which necessitates its broader application and the development of national-level guidelines.
The Lisbon meeting provided a valuable platform for exchanging methodologies, best practices, and innovative solutions in sustainable resource management. Participants underscored the importance of international collaboration in addressing the challenges of ensuring a secure and sustainable supply of critical raw materials, which is a cornerstone of Europe’s green and digital transitions.
