Innovative Water Retention for Climate Change Mitigation, Sustainable Agriculture and Flood Protection (InnoWATCCH)
The InnoWATCCH project started in April 2025 as part of the second call of the Interreg Transnational Cooperation Program of the Danube Region. It is aimed at finding solutions for increasingly pronounced problems related to water shortages and declining water quality, flood protection and sustainable management of water resources. Special attention is focused on the area of Central Europe, and emphasis is placed on the middle and lower course of the Danube and Sava rivers, where climate changes and pressures on the environment are particularly pronounced.
The project activities and objectives include:
- deepening the understanding of the interaction between groundwater and surface water,
- develepoment of a common methodology for determining priority areas of sampling and application of aquifer restoration methods (MAR),
- establishing and implementation of an integrated monitoring system,
- preparation of a methodological manual and creation of a joint action plan for the application of MAR technology,
- strengthening of institutional capacities through pilot testing and cross-border cooperation,
- active involvement of stakeholders and raising public awareness of challenges and possible solutions in the field of water management.
In this way, the project contributes to strengthening the resilience of the Danube region to climate and environmental challenges, promotes innovative approaches to the protection of water resources, and encourages long-term sustainable water management at the supranational level.
