Workshop on the United Nations Framework Classification for Mineral Resources (UNFC)

The Croatian Geological Survey (HGI-CGS) is involved in the education and application of the UNFC classification of mineral resources through the Geological service for Europe (GSEU) project (2022-2027). Given that the Critical Raw Materials Act (CRM Act) will come into force in the coming months, which plans for reporting of critical mineral resources in accordance with the UNFC classification, starting as early as 2025, the need for the implementation of the UNFC has increased rapidly. In response to this challenge, the GSEU project and the European Center of Excellence for Sustainable Resource Management (EU ICE SRM) established within it are organizing train-the-trainer workshops with the aim of enabling Geological Survey Organisation (GSO), partner of the project to train at least two people who can transfer knowledge of the application of the UNFC classification at the national level.

The training is designed in three levels, upgrading the UNFC implementation knowledge from basics (Level 1) through practitioner (Level 2) to trainer (Level 3), all planned for the year 2024. The first level provided basic knowledge about the UNFC classification of mineral resources, and took place on April 15th and 16th at the Geological Survey of Slovenia (GeoZS) in Ljubljana and online. The workshop was attended by 79 experts from 26 European countries, including 22 EU member states. The second and third levels of the workshop are focused on practical application and knowledge transfer, and will be conducted on May 14th and 15th and June 18th and 19th, respectively, also at GeoZS in Ljubljana. Upon completion of all three levels of education, Erli Kovačević Galović and Nikola Gizdavec from the Croatian Geological Survey will be qualified to transfer knowledge on the UNFC classification of mineral resources at the national level.
