The second workshop in the training cycle on the use of the United Nations Framework Classification for Mineral Resources (UNFC)
On May 14 and 15, the second of three workshops was held at the Geological Survey of Slovenia (GeoZS) in Ljubljana as part of the Geological service for Europe (GSEU, 2022-2027) project and the European Centre of Excellence for Sustainable Resource Management.
A total of 44 participants from 20 European countries took part in the workshop. The theoretical knowledge of the UNFC classification was deepened and tested in practise using numerous examples from different countries. The experts from the Croatian Geological Survey, Erli Kovačević Galović and Nikola Gizdavec, took part in the workshop and discussed the application of the UNFC classification using selected examples of mineral deposits from the Croatian Mineral Resources Database, which is managed and maintained by the Croatian Geological Survey, as well as active and inactive exploitation fields from the Mineral Resources Register, which is managed by the Mining Department of the Ministry of Economy and Sustainable Development.
The UNFC training cycle will conclude with the third workshop, which will also take place at GeoZS from June 18 to 19, 2024. The aim of the workshops is to train experts in the application of the UNFC and to pass on this knowledge. They are conducted as part of the support for the implementation of the Regulation of the European Parliament and of the Council establishing a framework for ensuring a secure and sustainable supply of critical raw materials (2024/1252), which entered into force on May 23, 2024.
