DEPARTMENT FOR MINERAL RESOURCES AND MARINE GEOLOGY
Geological Mapping Programme
Map of Mineral Resources of the Republic of Croatia
This program aims to continue work on maps of mineral resources of the Republic of Croatia and maps of the geological potential of mineral resources. The research work is focused primarily on the systematization of existing data about primary and secondary mineral deposits and the occurrences of mineral resources, and on determination of the geological potential of mineral resources. Database of mineral resources consists of more than 3500 mineral deposits and occurrences. The mapping programme is based on mapping of mineral resources and geological potential for regional administrations units (counties) of the Republic of Croatia, based on geological lithostratigraphic setting of Basic Geological Map of the Republic of Croatia, as a part of mining-geological studies of the counties. Mpas and databases of mineral resources serve as a spatial basis for the development of unique information system of mineral resources and it s designed and adapted to the INSPIRE European Commission Directive. The Survey has a major role in design and implementation of the Mineral Resources Management Strategy of the Republic of Croatia. Detailed research of non-metallic raw materials such as brick clay deposits, building stone and raw materials for cement industry, based on preparation of studies on mineral sereves and other geological prospective studies. HGI-CGS staff are members of the committees responsible for obtaining of concessions for the exploration and exploitation of mineral resources within the mining sector, as well as for spatial planning related to mineral resources. Scientific goal is to develop the models of the impact of mineral resources on environment, to solve the origin of individual types of deposits and to developa model of assessment of geological potential valuation based on processing of various geodata and using of remote sensing (satellite images, thermal spectrum). Development of investigations of mineral resources is an important component of the Horizon 2020 program, and European Institute for Innovation and Technology program-Raw Material EIT RM, where the Survey is a project partner. Most of the projects related to mineral resources are expected to be funded from this fund in coming years. The aforementioned research of mineral resources have positioned HGI-CGS as the central authority in Croatia in the field of mineral resources and economic geology.
