A cross-border approach to improve landslide risk assessment using LiDAR-based landslide inventory (LADY)

Deepwater-CE logo

Motivation

The devastating impact of landslides is one of the main problems faced by LADY. A striking example occurred during the extreme weather events of 2014, which had a significant impact on the Program area. The entire region was affected, particularly the area of the city of Tuzla and the Brčko District, where approximately 6,800 landslides were triggered, resulting in estimated damages of around €500 million. The severity of the damages highlights the lack of societal preparedness, revealing low resilience to landslide risks. The recognized vulnerability is not limited to just one country but represents a common challenge for all partner countries that LADY aims to address.

Goals and Activities

The project is aimed at improving landslide risk assessment in partner countries. In this regard, one of the most challenging tasks is to ensure a detailed landslide inventory over a large area, with initial activities focused on creating a landslide inventory using LiDAR technology. The manually created inventory will serve as a basis for developing a machine learning application that will automate the process of creating the landslide inventory and ensure objective results. The project will also develop a standardized methodology for landslide risk assessment, enabling more effective risk management. In addition to the technical aspects, the project also aims to raise awareness about landslide risks and disaster preparedness among various stakeholders, from school-aged children to the general public.
