European Marine Observation and Data Network (EMODnet)
EMODnet Geologija-5 (II)
The European Marine Observation and Data Network (EMODnet) is the European Commission (EC) marine data service of the EC Directorate-General Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (EC DG MARE) and funded by the European Maritime Fisheries and Aquaculture Fund.
EMODnet was established in 2009, and since then has played an important role as a trusted source of marine environmental and human activities data and data products. It covers seven lots – bathymetry, geology, physics, chemistry, biology, seabed habitats and human activities, and therefore includes the entire marine environment from coast to open ocean, surface and subsurface.
All the compiled data is available online via the EMODnet Portal (a href="www.emodnet.ec.europa.eu">www.emodnet.ec.europa.eu). This is an access point to all EMODnet services. It provides free access to marine data, metadata, and data products gathered by marine experts. The portal also offers data and information on the Blue Economy operations, from vessel density and offshore platform sitings to hosting EU Member State Maritime Spatial Plans.
Croatian Geological Survey (HGI-CGS) joined the EMODnet Geology family in 2013 and has played an active role in data and observation collection, and will continue to do so in the latest iteration named EMODnet Geology VI that started in September 2025 and to last for four years. The focus of EMODnet Geology has been to continuously provide harmonised offshore data products, including sea-floor geology, seabed substrates, rates of coastline migration, geological events and probabilities, mineral resources, and submerged landscapes. While those products will continue to be updated in EMODnet VI, new products will be added, including borehole and grab sample data, seismic survey data, organic carbon content of sediments, Carbon 14 measurements, and multibeam survey data, using interactive maps and tools.
