Epicentralno podru\u010dje Rijeke obilje\u017eava pojava u\u010destalih i relativno blagih potresa uz sporadi\u010dnu pojavu umjerenih i jakih potresa, koji su prema povijesnim podatcima uzrokovali i znatnija lokalna razaranja. Vjerojatni uzrok tih potresa je desno horizontalno kretanje du\u017e jedne od glavnih rasjednih zona dinaridskog pru\u017eanja, koja je vjerojatno isprekidana jo\u0161 uvijek nejasno definiranom zonom popre\u010dnih kvarnerskih rasjeda, \u0161to uz pretpostavljeno gravitacijsko klizanje starijih dinaridskih navlaka, mogu\u0107e rezultira kompleksnim transpresijsko-transtenzijskim re\u017eimom u podru\u010dju Kvarnera. S ciljem \u0161to kvalitetnije procjene mehanizama potresa, nu\u017eni su geolo\u0161ki 3D modeli izra\u0111eni na temelju suvremenih formacijskih (litostratigrafskih) karata, bu\u0161otinskih podataka, te interpretiranih seizmi\u010dkih profila. Neotektonika se mo\u017ee detektirati putem analize najmla\u0111ih naslaga iz plitkog podmorja (geo-akusti\u010dna snimanja), daljinskih i izravnih istra\u017eivanja geomorfolo\u0161kih formi te putem (re)interpretacije i datiranja kvartarnih naslaga na kopnu.
