U posljednjih nekoliko godina, pojavom sekvenciranja genoma pojavile su se velike mogu\u0107nosti u istra\u017eivanju genomskom potencijala i metaboli\u010dke aktivnost globalnog mikrobioma. Genomi od vi\u0161e od 300 000 bakterija I vi\u0161e od 3000 arhea pru\u017eili su klju\u010dni uvid u, na primjer, njihovu evoluciju i ulogu u biogeokemijskim ciklusima, njihovim na\u010dinima patogeneze i antimikrobne rezistencije i genetskim osnovicama na kojima se temelji njihov biotehnolo\u0161ki potencijal. Stoga podati iz metagenoma dobiveni izravno iz DNK okoli\u0161a mogu pru\u017eiti nove, nevi\u0111ene uvide u strukturu, funkciju i metaboli\u010dki kapacitet mikrobne zajednice. Istra\u017eivanje enzima koji djeluju u ekstremnim uvjetima od posebnog je interesa za mnoge biotehnolo\u0161ke i industrijske procese. U Hrvatskoj je jedan takav okoli\u0161, geotermalni izvori, gotovo potpuno neistra\u017een i predstavlja potencijalni izvor mikrobnih vrsta, novih putova i enzima. Glavni cilj prijedloga je upotreba visoko paralelnog kvantitativnog sekvenciranja gena rRNA SSU, sekvenciranje amplikona SSD cDNA i kvantitativna PCR reverzne transkripcije, kao i metagenomika i metatranskriptomika za analizu sastava, dinamike i funkcije mikrobne zajednice, kao i biotehnolo\u0161ke perspektive u brojnim hrvatskim geotermalnim izvorima. Suradnja i umre\u017eavanje s vrhunskim europskim znanstvenicima pridonijet \u0107e daljnjem razvoju kvalitete i konkurentnosti istra\u017eivanja mikrobne ekologije u Hrvatskoj.
