Sige su sekundarni karbonatni spiljski nanosi koji se formiraju djelovanjem podzemnim voda unutar podzemnih pukotina u kr\u0161u. Stalagmiti nastaju kapanjem vodene otopine sa stropa \u0161pilje te brzina rasta ovisi o sastavu prokapnice i ki\u0161nice te o klimatskim uvjetima. Prema tome, stalagmiti mogu sadr\u017eavati zapis prija\u0161njih promjena okoli\u0161a talo\u017eenja.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Istalo\u017eeni slojevi se mogu precizno datirati, koriste\u0107i uran-torij (U-Th) i uran-olovo (U-Pb) izotopne metode odre\u0111ivanja starosti te metodu radioaktivnog izotopa ugljika. Debljina istalo\u017eenih slojeva, njihov izotopni i elementni sastav mo\u017ee se koristiti za odre\u0111ivanje prija\u0161njih klimatskih promjena u razli\u010ditim rezolucijama. Prednost kori\u0161tenja siga u paleoklimatskim istra\u017eivanjima u usporedbi s drugim arhivima jest njihova \u0161iroka rasprostranjenost (gotovo u svim klimatskim zonama), dobra o\u010duvanost (za\u0161ti\u0107enost u stabilnim spiljskim okoli\u0161ima kroz duge vremenske periode), vi\u0161estruki klimatski-osjetljivi posredni pokazatelji i relativno visoka rezolucija (godi\u0161nja ili je \u010dak \u010desto mogu\u0107a sezonska rezolucija). Dakle, sige su jedan od mogu\u0107ih na\u010dina utvr\u0111ivanja paleoklimatskih uvjeta i sve ve\u0107i broj istra\u017eivanja \u00a0pokazuje njihovu korisnost u odre\u0111ivanju klimatskih varijabilnosti u pro\u0161losti, uklju\u010duju\u0107i istra\u017eiva\u010de iz Instituta, koji imaju veliku ulogu u pomicanju granica istra\u017eivanja siga u svijetu, \u0161to potvr\u0111uje objavljen znanstveni rad u presti\u017enom \u010dasopisu Science dr. sc.
