DEPARTMENT OF HYDROGEOLOGY AND ENGINEERING GEOLOGY
Geological Mapping Programme
Basic Hydrogeological Map of the Republic of Croatia
Project leader: Terzić Josip, PhD
Project Basic hydrogeological map is one of the fundamental projects of the Croatian Geological Survey. The primary goal of this project is the regional display of hydrogeological properties and relationships, valorization of fresh groundwater and groundwater used for other purposes, and hydrothermal systems. Project has 12 active participants (employed hydrogeologists), and it's a part of Department of Hydrogeology and Engineering Geology. Except of hydrogeologist, technicians and often colleagues from other projects are involved in Basic Geological Map project. For a long time, Geological Maps Programme doesn't have a stable financing, but Basic Geological Map is still running in a certain extent. Fundamental scale of project is 1:100.000, and the result - publication consists hydrogeological maps, database and cartographic preview of used objects and explanatory notes. Occasionally we will publish some regional hydrogeological previews in smaller scale. The long-term plan is to publish a Basic Hydrogeological Map of the Republic of Croatia in scale 1:300.000.
Due to insufficient direct financing, only one map sheet - Sheet Rab, is fully completed, reviewed and printed.
Basic Hydrogeological Map - Sheet Rab
Two other map sheets (Krapina and Otočac) are reviewed and their production will be financed by the Department of Hydrogeology and Engineering Geology. The intention is to move from the old standard - map sheets of Basic Geological Map 1:100.000 to a new standard - hydrologically logical areas such as drainage basins, regions, catchment areas, etc.
The scientific component of work on project gets stronger year after year. The researches of this fundamental project constantly apply and work on projects with various sources of funding, and on this way they collect valuable database that will be applied in Basic Hydrogeological Map Project. The number of published scientific papers has been increasing for years, and numerous of doctoral dissertations was made within the project.
Department laboratories are closely connected to the Project researches and other hydrogeological researches - hydrochemical, laboratory for remote sensing researches, google-translate geophysical, and in smaller part engineering laboratory. The full integration of these working groups into everyday hydrogeological tasks leads to improvements in both directions - researches are more and more efficient and are easier to be published, and by work on projects of different types, we continually purchase or upgrade existing research equipment, both field and laboratory. Almost all the equipment of laboratories is purchased directly from the projects (Croatian Science Foundation or Interreg EUor bought on Department cost.
